Structural Health Monitoring in Extreme Harsh Environments
The research is about strain (including creep and crack) and temperature monitoring in metallic and other structures using optical fiber sensors.
The uniqueness of this research is that nobody in the world can monitor strain in metallic structures above 500OC till date except the PI.
The application area is extreme harsh environments, including steam engines, jet engines and nuclear power plants.
Detection of nutrients in food by Optical Methods
An optical fiber-based probe, and a NIR spectrometer, are used to detect food nutrients or pharmaceutical ingredients, etc.
Python-based machine learning algorithm and LabVIEW-based user interface are designed to make the system a stand-alone unit.
Other application areas of the study are Moisture measurement in grains, Composition of fats and edible oils, Pharmaceutical ingredients blending, and Forensic sciences.
Simulation (COMSOL Multiphysics) and Experimental Studies on Cryogenic Temperature Measurement using Optical Fiber Sensors
Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) principle is used to realize fibre optic sensors. Immunity to electromagnetic interference, significant cable weight saving, reliability, safety, good corrosion resistance and shallow magnetic field interactions, reduced turnover time, and cost advantages are the major advantages.
Multiple sensors can be realized on a single fibre, which can be signal processed by one set of electronics.
Considering these advantages, using them to measure cryogenic temperatures are being explored in this research work.
